Interactive Design & front end Development

In the past 8 years, I've been an Interactive Designer, a Project Manager, and a Sailing Instructor. I can design it, build it, bring a project together, and tie awesome knots.

Portland Pedal Power

This summer, I had the privilege of redesigning Portland Pedal Power's website. This project was really fun and not only resulted in a more engaging and easier to navigate site, but the project helped streamline their businessflow.

This was a good sized project that included redefining the site's users, use cases, and user flows, as well as designing wireframes, style guides, and a working front-end prototype that would later be used in the final build. I really enjoyed the challenge of this project, from learning about the new backend architecture, to understanding their internal process, designing for features that would be implemented in ongoing phases, and prototype dev using Twitter Bootstrap.

Visualizing Jobs in America

This project explores the Job Landscape in the US, and how it has changed in the last 50 years: who's working, what the jobs are, and where they're going.

Using government and census data, I researched and got an understanding of what all the data looked like surrounding the Jobs. Instead of focusing on a specific story or narrative, I explored different ways to show the data objectively, and call out any special niceties or interesting facts.

Fraser River Basin Visualization

There are a lot of issues surrounding salmon in the Fraser River Basin (BC) right now. This visualization uses geo-spatial and temporal data to explore the state of the Fraser while allowing visitors to dive down into more local detail.

Throughout this project, I oversaw the collection of all the data used, designed and described user interactions throughout the visualization, and helped peg down designed styles. In addition to the Design responsibilities I managed the project and was the primary contact to the client, scientists gathering the data, and the data engineers who were building the custom database.

Needless to say, I learned a lot about the Fraser Basin. :)

Yahoo!'s C.O.R.E. Visualization

This visualization lets visitors explore how the articles on their Yahoo! homepage are tailored to fit their likes and interests. It's a great peak into the way that Yahoo's Content Optimization Relevancy Engine (C.O.R.E.) works.

Part of this project's charm is the real-time ability to see immediately how articles are influenced by a profile's gender, age range, interest, and location of a profile.

During the strategic phase of this project I lead brainstorming sessions, researched C.O.R.E., presented my findings, and created wireframes that illustrated the layout of the visualization, all user interactions, and the infographics within the piece.

Yahoo!'s Mail Visualization

The Yahoo! mail visualization is another near-real time visualization that depicts the amount of mail that Yahoo! processes at any given moment around the world. Users can explore world-wide and continent email usage,

For this project, I was led group brainstorming sessions that resulted in project ideas pitched to Yahoo!, created wireframes illustrating the layout of the visualization and the various user interactions throughout the piece, and created the infographics in the piece calling out important facts about Yahoo's Mail.

Living Yoga's Website Redesign

Leading a team of four for a class project, we redesigned Living Yoga's website in just two terms (22 weeks). We cleaned up the site, gave it an updated look, and used Drupal as a CMS so that the client could own their content.

As the project lead, I met with the client, gathered content from them, managed our team, and stepped in to help with design, front-end development, information architecture, and client training where necessary.

This was a super rewarding project that allowed Living Yoga to do their job better, and focus on their service for inmates.

AIPD's Web Raising

Every year, the Web Design students at The Art Institute of Portland band together to create a website for a non-profit (from start to finish) in less than 24 hours. In 2009, I lead the students working with Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Centers.

As Project Manager, I oversaw three teams of students (about 18 students total) throughout the day, acted as liaison between the client and the teams, and created a digestible schedule with realistic milestones that enabled the teams to move swiftly so that we met our goal of making the site in less than 24 hours. I even helped out with the front-end development too.

Some of the people I've worked with

I've been pretty lucky over the past few years. I've gotten to work with a lot of great companies and organizations that do good in the world. Here's just a few of the lovely companies that I've done work for and interacted with.
